The one thing both a good photographer and make up artist will do is use natural light when ever possible. Unfortunately this is not always the case of all wedding photographers. So here are a few words of advice in respect to selecting a wedding photographer for your big day.
I have the permission of a very experienced make up artist and stylist, to quote her in respect of when things evidently go wrong ....... the names having been changed to protect the guilty.
Quote:
"I frustratingly did the hair and make up for a bride today. Their so called "photographer" came who was a friend of the family and started taking picture's of the white dress hanging up.I was mortified to see that the "photographer" had drawn all the green curtains blocking out the nice diffused ambient light and was bouncing a flash gun onto a green canopy of a four poster bed to take the shot of the very lovely white dress. I asked her very politely why she had closed the curtains. She replied that she did not like the net curtains. I could not help myself but to suggest that she actually opened the curtains and drew back the nets to let in as much natural light as possible. Looking back at me she said "I never thought of that". I cannot imagine what those wedding shots are going to be like. But do feel for the bride as she is going to be so disappointed. Why do people take such a gamble on such a special day....????"
Unquote.
So how does a couple without the experience of this make up artist, make that selection about their photographer to avoid what are clearly going to be poor images for this poor bride?
I know there is lots of advise on this subject in wedding magazines etc, but to my mind these can often be rather confusing. So I am going to try and keep it very simply here. Firstly, using a friend of the family who is not a professional wedding photographer is a recipe for disaster, maybe not always, but why risk that and more importantly a friendship when it goes wrong. So choose a photographer who shoots wedding for a living, as they know what they are doing and can show you examples of their work to back this up. Very importantly choose a photographer whose work you like and find it easy to get on with, if you get on with them, it is most likely so will your family and guests on your big day making for a pleasurable experience for everyone. I do know that couples are always on a budget and even more so in the present climate, however you should not sacrifice your photography because of this, because once the day is over, the only thing left other than your memories, are your photographs therefore it is important that these reflect your day as you want to remember it.
Finally look for images where natural light has been used if a photographer hasn't got any of these in their portfolio they either shoot all their weddings at night or behind drawn curtains either way don't book them.Labels: choosing a natural lighting window wedding photographer marc byram what to look for
